Definitions

Below are the current definitions that we use in the dataset. These are heavily subject (and expected) to change. We are starting wide with the goal to focus down in the future as we can come up with clearer definitions.
The most important thing to note is that profile sectors outline where a project operates, the product type answers what it operates.

Profiles

A group of two or more people who have established a flattened hierarchy for making decisions and executing operational activities using blockchain technology.

Company
This profile has a for-profit mandate in place, or at least a business plan with the goal of generating revenue.

NFT collection
This profile is a set of unique art items for purchase, typically created by a single creator, though it may also be a theme that includes pieces of work from multiple creators.

Project
This profile is an organization with an undefined objective, purpose or offering.

Investor
The main function of this profile is to raise and deploy funds for the purpose of generating returns on the initial sum.

Government
The profile is an organization or agency that exercises political authority in the interests of its residents or constituents.

Anything to do with trading or exchanging fungible assets such as assets, money or commodities.

Payments
The primary function or service involves sending currency from one person or entity to another, often (but not always) in exchange for services.

Anything that regards contracts for protection of property, activities and assets.

Asset Management
Includes tools or products that allow customers to manage items of value that exist on a blockchain. Example: wallets

Developer Tooling
Services and products that support product designers and builders with doing things on chain.

Gaming
Includes anything that centers its activities around interactive entertainment.

Infrastructure
Things that enable other blockchain products or services to function. Example: nodes, staking

Blockchain Platforms
A platform for developers and users to build and interact with a smart contract or infrastructure. Example: Ethereum

Supply chain
Projects to do with moving physical goods, also includes fast moving consumer goods.

Data & Analytics
Services, APIs and platforms that provide information, statistics or activity. Includes oracles

NFTs
Anything that facilitates activities around unique (often collector) items on chain. Example: marketplaces

Healthcare
Services that are focused on the physical and mental well-being of people.

Science
Projects that are focused on advancing and funding particular knowledge systems such as biology, chemistry and physics.

Security
Projects and services that are focused on increasing the safety of interacting in the blockchain space.

Auditing
Anything regarding the methodological review of projects and services, sometimes (but not always) for the sake of security.

Mining
Anything to do with the extraction of an asset, such as bitcoin or information.

Metaverse
All things to do with virtual worlds combined with blockchain.

Information has been shared publicly about the profile, but a person can only interact one way with the profile (e.g., subscribe to a newsletter, follow on Twitter), or the profile cannot offer its service or product yet.

Active
A person can successfully have a two-way interaction with the profile’s offering (e.g., use the product or service, build on the blockchain), or the profile has a working product that is being maintained.
3
Inactive
A person has frequent unsuccessful interactions with the profile’s service or product, or the service or product is no longer being supported / actively worked on.

Closed
A person can no longer interact with the profile’s offering, or the entity has announced the profile’s closure.
5
Acquired
The profile has been purchased by or merged with another company / protocol.

A private key manager that can be accessed through a browser.

A software module that can be installed on a browser so that users can interact with their on-chain assets.

An application used to port assets from one blockchain to another.

An application that collects many different applications for the purpose of porting assets.

Decentralised Exchange
A protocol that enables the trading of cryptocurrencies directly between users without the need for a central authority.

DEX Aggregator
A service that scans multiple decentralised exchanges, often to compare prices and liquidity for trading pairs.

Centralised Exchange
A platform where cryptocurrencies are traded through an authority or mediator that facilitates the transactions and often provides wallet services.

On/Off Ramp
Services that allow for the conversion between cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies, facilitating entry and exit points into the crypto market.

FinOps Tooling
Financial operations tools designed to manage spending and make monetary administration more efficient.

Decentralised Borrowing & Lending
A peer-to-peer financial system on the blockchain that allows users to collateralize digital assets without the need for a central authority.

Centralised Borrowing & Lending
Platforms operated by mediating entities that facilitate the collateralization of digital assets, often with added features like interest accounts.

Off-Chain Insurance
Products and contracts that provide coverage for crypto-related risks and events, processed outside the blockchain.

On-Chain Insurance
Products and contracts that provide coverage for crypto-related risks and events, executed automatically on the blockchain.

A service providing real-time and historical financial information for cryptocurrencies from various markets for integration into apps and services.

A service offering developers direct access to information stored on a blockchain, usually for the purpose of building applications on it.

Game
Interactive digital entertainment designed on blockchain technology, often incorporating cryptocurrencies, NFTs, play-to-earn or tokenized assets for in-game transactions and ownership.

NFT Marketplace
An online platform where unique digital assets can be bought, sold or traded.

NFT Issuance Platform
A service that allows users to create and issue their own unique digital assets, typically involving digital art or collectibles.

Media
Content distribution platforms utilizing blockchain to manage digital rights, monetization, and ownership of content such as videos, articles, and music.

A platform that enables the conversion of rights to a physical asset into a digital token on a blockchain.

Liquid Staking
A form of securing a blockchain that involves locking up participants’ on-chain assets, and the participants receive an asset in return that can be spent, traded or exchanged like any other fungible asset.

Derivatives
Financial contracts on the blockchain whose value is based on the performance of an underlying digital asset, allowing for hedging, speculation, or access to new markets.

A new, for-profit company in its local jurisdiction that is often building a technology-related product, entering an emerging market, seeking non-traditional funding, or a combination of such activities.

Government Agency
A representative or organization that acts on behalf of a nation-state’s interests.

Listed Company
A for-profit entity that has successfully issued equity that can be traded on at least one stock exchange.
